Blue Jays topple Fontbonne for SLIAC victory

Freshman forward Tanner Gentges' free throw with 43 seconds left completed the Blue Jays' comeback in their 78-75 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Fontbonne Griffins on Saturday.

Westminster (13-8, 10-4) won for a fifth-straight game despite trailing 39-34 at halftime and seeing that deficit climb to double digits in the second half.

Fontbonne's Blake Welch knocked down a 3-pointer with 11:24 to go in the second half to push his team's lead out to 59-49. Two free throws from senior guard Joe James got the Blue Jays to within 71-70 with 2:27 left, but the Griffin's lead went back up to three on Richard Dorhauer's free throws with 1:37 remaining.

Westminster tied the game at 73-all on junior Brandon Moore's 3 with 1:22 to go then took the lead its next time down the floor on Gentges' free throws.

William Woods 58

Owls senior guard Jonathon Nutt scored a game-high 22 points, but it wasn't enough as William Woods dropped its fifth in a row to American Midwest Conference foe Park on Saturday at Anderson Arena.

William Woods (6-18, 4-10) had a lead as large as nine points in the first half, but saw it trimmed down to one point when a layup from the Pirates Xavielle Brown made it a 33-32 Owls lead with 26 seconds left till halftime.

Senior forward Seth Thomas' layup with a second left sent William Woods into intermission with a 35-32 advantage.

Lutz named SLIAC Player of the Week

Wesminster senior guard Leigh Ann Lutz was named the SLIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.

Lutz averaged 24.5 points, three assists and 3.5 steals in a pair of Lady Blue Jay wins last week.
