Lady Owls split opening matches at Bellevue tourney

William Woods swept the host Lady Bruins 26-24, 26-24 and 25-23 to close out opening play at the Bellevue College Tournament on Friday night.

The Lady Owls (2-2) held off late charges by Bellevue in all three games, despite registering just a 9.4 team-attack percentage. Freshman setter Brittney Engelbrecht supplied a team-high 24 assists, freshman outside hitter Abby Ferguson paced William Woods University with nine digs and junior outside hitter Emily Becker led with eight kills.

The Lady Owls took the first set from the Clarke College Lady Crusaders 25-23 earlier Friday, but dropped the final three games 25-18, 25-22 and 25-15. William Woods concluded the match with a 12.9 attack percentage.

Engelbrecht notched a double-double with 29 assists and 14 digs, while freshman outside hitter Abbi McKnelly contributed 12 kills.

William Woods - receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll - wrapped up tournament play against Baker (Kan.) University and Northwestern (Iowa) College on Saturday. Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Owls host Culver-Stockton College at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
