Will meet South Callaway for championship

AUXVASSE -The North Callaway Thunderbirds reached the championship of the Montgomery County Tournament after a pair of narrow home wins Wednesday.

The Thunderbirds edged Bowling Green 3-2 in first-round play in the afternoon, then followed up by fending off Louisiana 3-1 in the semifinals at night. The latter victory was head coach Kevin O'Neal's 100th in his eight seasons at North Callaway.

"We had an excellent job of pitching and we put our hits together when we needed to," O'Neal said. "I was very happy to get my 100th win."

The Thunderbirds (5-1) now move on to a showdown against South Callaway for the tournament title at 6 p.m. Saturday at Montgomery City. The Bulldogs (6-3) made the finals Wednesday at Montgomery City by manhandling the host Wildcats 15-3 in the first round and then downing Mark Twain 7-2 in the semifinals.

MONTGOMERY CITY - The Bulldogs combined for 23 hits in rolling past Montgomery County 15-3 and then Mark Twain 7-2 on Wednesday in opening play at the Montgomery County Tournament.

South Callaway (6-3) will face North Callaway for the tournament championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Montgomery City. The Thunderbirds advanced Wednesday with a 3-2 first-round victory over Bowling Green and a 3-1 semifinal triumph over Louisiana in Auxvasse.

MSD's Jones wins three

events at Fatima meet

WESTPHALIA - Senior Nick Jones triumphed in the 100, 200 and 400 meters to pace the Eagles to a sixth-place team finish at the Rick Buersmeyer Invitational on Tuesday.

Jones was victorious in the 100 in 11.28 seconds, the 200 in :22.90 and the 400 in :51.78 as the Missouri School for the Deaf boys totalled 86 points. He also came in second in the long jump with a distance of 19 feet, 1 1/2 inches. Jones won Class 1 state titles last year in the 100 and 200, while taking second in the state in the 400 and third in the long jump.

North Callaway boys, girls finish

third and fifth at Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN - Junior Steven Coleman prevailed in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles to direct the Thunderbirds to a third-place team finish at the Bowling Green Mini Medal meet Tuesday.

In the girls' division, senior Jaida Gray and sophomore Skylar Schmauch both won a pair of events as the Ladybirds came in fifth overall.
