New Bloomfield students become baristas with coffeehouse business

New Bloomfield firefighters, police chief Chris Hammann, high school students and educators, including Assistant Principal Susan Dudley and Special Services Director Sarah Wisdom gathered around the high school's concession stand for a photo to celebrate the installation of a cappuccino machine. With the machine and coffee makers, the students will open Wildcat Brew and serve hot chocolate, coffee and, of course, cappuccinos. Wisdom said students will develop their own business plans and learn job skills while working as baristas.

There's a new business brewing at New Bloomfield High School.

Students in the special services program received a cappuccino machine earlier this week and will soon open up Wildcat Brew. The students will serve cappuccinos, coffee and hot chocolate in the mornings for their peers.

New Bloomfield Police Chief Chris Hammann, who works full-time at Ronnoco Coffee, offered the school a deal on the machine and the New Bloomfield Fire Department bought it for the students.

Sarah Wisdom, New Bloomfield Special Services Director, said her students will learn job, business, financial, advertising and social skills through Wildcat Brew.

"They're proud," Wisdom said. "They're excited about this ... and to interact with their peers."

Corbin Valentine, student, said he plans on working in a restaurant during summer vacations and possibly after high school and Wildcat Brew will prepare him for that.

"This can help me with it," he said. "I have to work fast and this will help me work fast."

Student Katie Caldwell is looking forward to spending time with her classmates and friends. The drinks, she added, are a plus too in any kind of weather.

"I drink it on hot days and I drink it on cold days," Caldwell said.

All Wildcat Brew proceeds will go back into the class to help support the student-run business.
