The Callaway County Health Department is sponsoring events to celebrate National Public Health Week, which starts Monday.

All events throughout the week are free and open to the public.

Monday is "nutrition day." The department will have recipes available and will teach attendees how to most accurately read nutrition labels.

Emergency preparedness will be the theme for Tuesday. Lists with phone app applicable to health and emergencies will be provided in addition to citizen notification sign ups. Mylene Dunn, Callaway County environmental public health specialist, will give information on food storage.

The public will have an opportunity to check up on their individual health on Wednesday with "health day." Health department employees will measure heights, weights and body mass indexes. The first 20 individuals interested can have their finger poked for a cholesterol measurement, and the first 40 interested can have their blood sugar levels measured.

Thursday is "healthy eating day." The department will teach a class on "My Plate," the federally recognized nutrition guide, to teenagers and older adults. There will also be a class on breast feeding.

On Friday, the health department will open its doors for an open house from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Punch and cookies will be provided and a lap quilt will be raffled. Certificates for free flu shots will also be available.

Sharon Lynch, director of the Callaway County Health Department, said the health department is hosting the week-long event in order to help raise awareness in the community about the department's duties.

"Public health is community health," Lynch said. "It's about how do you raise up the community's health level."

The Callaway County Health Department is located at 4950 County Road 304 in Fulton and is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
