The future of Fulton's railroad might come down to a single bridge.

Fulton Area Development Corporation President Bruce Hackmann addressed the city council at its Tuesday meeting after being contacted by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

As part of an overall plan to create an outer road leading to North Callaway High School to remove the need to use the dangerous intersection at U.S. Highway 54 and County Road 148, MoDOT plans to demolish the old railroad bridge over Old U.S. 40 in Kingdom City.

"It's only 13 feet and 1 inch high," Hackmann said. "Semis can't get under there, and they plan to reroute traffic there in case of an accident. Once the bridge is out, that cuts off access on the line to Fulton."

Hackmann said that for that reason, MoDOT would be willing to place money in an escrow fund that could be accessed to rebuild a bridge should the line come into use for businesses in Fulton and Callaway County.
