Homes for hound dogs

Humane Society drive to collect unused dog houses for "homeless' pups kicks off

Though many dogs in Callaway County have owners, not all have a house to call their own.

Sandy Corbet, Callaway County Humane Society president, hopes to change that.

The organization's third annual "Home for the Holidays" drive begins this month. The humane society will be collecting unused dog houses throughout November to donate to homes with dogs that do not have their own dog houses in December.

"It's a really fun program and it's pretty rewarding," Corbet said. "The dogs are really thankful, they go in and roll around; they're really happy when they've got straw."

Corbet began the program as a way to respond to calls from neighbors and concerned residents who observe a dog without adequate shelter during colder months.

When Corbet receives a call or notices a dog herself, she delivers one of the donated houses along with hay, extra food and treats.

To help the tornado-stricken people of Dumas and surroundings, donations can be made to the Delta Area Disaster Relief Fund, care of the Delta Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 894, Dumas, AR, 71639, or through the Arkansas Community Foundation, 700 S. Rock St., Little Rock, AR, 72202.
