PhotoVoice Project to debut today

Photos taken by students participating in the PhotoVoice Project from Callaway County will be on display today (May 21) at the YMCA in Fulton.

The event will run from 5:30- 7 p.m. This is the first time Callaway County has been part of the project, which is sponsored by Central Missouri Community Action.

Students featured are in seventh, eighth or ninth grade, four of whom are from South Callaway Middle School and three from Missouri School for the Deaf. They have been taking pictures of the world around them for several weeks.

Each student has created a portfolio of pictures that captures issues around their community that need improvement, such as poverty or health. The students took part in an eight-week course that covered the topics of basic needs, health, wellness and lifelong learning.

"These pictures really cross the board on those topics," said Tad Dobyns, CMCA Callaway community organizer. "They also got the opportunity to be creative."
