Post 210 squad both competitive, convenient

Competitive summer baseball is an expensive venture.

Tim Echelmeier, an assistant coach for the Fulton Hornets high school team and a father of two ballplayers, can attest.

"The problem is that in high school, if (players) want to play good competition, they feel like they have to play for a club team or a prospect team and those can be pretty expensive," Echelmeier said last week.

Echelmeier understands that some players have the skills and means to join summer traveling teams. But he also knows that not everyone can do that.

Good baseball can be played without breaking the bank and traveling in every which direction all summer. Hence, the re-emergence of a Post 210 American Legion team in Fulton.

"We tried to do something that allows these kids - and we're basically a Callaway County team - to see that good competition," Echelmeier said.
