Callaway County Road and Bridge crews were busy Tuesday replacing culverts on two Callaway County roads that were washed out by recent heavy rainfall.
Paul Winkelmann, Callaway County Highway Administrator, said Tuesday tree limbs and other debris blocked the movement of water through a culvert on County Road 1005 north of Williamsburg. The debris diverted water around the culvert, resulting in the eventual washout of the culvert.
"That road will be closed for a week or so until we can get a replacement culvert pipe," Winkelmann said.
Winkelmann said a culvert on County Road 1023 near Shamrock also was washed out and needs to be repaired.
Some county roads near the Missouri River in southern Callaway County are still covered with water, he said.
On Sunday the Missouri River at Jefferson City crested at 30.79 feet, almost eight feet above flood stage of 23 feet. But when the rain subsided the river began to drop rapidly. At 2 p.m. Tuesday the Missouri River at Jefferson City was down to 26.8 feet.
"The drop in the river levels should help reduce most of the flooding on Callaway County roads near the Missouri River," Winkelmann said.
