State Historical Society brings book talk to Fulton

July 10th, 2013 in News

A German-born central Missouri settler who went on to serve the state's legislature during the Civil War, Gert Goebel had a unique perspective on The Show-Me State. Now, that perspective is widely available to English-speaking audiences for the first time.

Missouri-born Texas A&M History professor Walter Kamphoefner has spent the past year helping the late MU German professor Adolf Schroeder translate Goebel's memoirs, "Longer than a Man's Lifetime in Missouri." Those in Fulton will get a preview of Goebel's accounts of "Old American" frontiersmen and farmers, German settlers and their interactions, during an editor's book 11:30 a.m. July 27 at Well Read Books.

The talk is in conjunction with The State Historical Society of Missouri. The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society and Museum will also be open that Saturday for special extended hours.

Brian Warren of Well Read said he learned of the book and the State Historical Society and got in touch with them to host the talk. The book is available for sale at the store.
