Missouri Department of Transportation officials have unveiled a tentative plan to build a new 1.3-mile access road to the North Callaway High School near Kingdom City.
MoDOT officials met Wednesday with Callaway County and Kingdom City representatives to discuss the department's plan and to hear any concerns they might have with the $1.6 million project.
Callaway County Presiding Commissioner Gary Jungermann said the access road would provide a safer connection between U.S. 54 and the high school and also provide direct access to County Road 148, which connects at the same point.
Jungermann said the state would finance the entire construction project.
Jungermann said he expects some local opposition to the project because the changes may disrupt some local traffic through the area.
Gidget Mott, MoDOT transportation project manager, said the state agency wants to replace the current grade crossing leading into the high school for safety reasons.
