The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will have an open house on Jan. 17 in Fulton to discuss preliminary results of the agency's review of a Ameren Missouri's request to renew its nuclear reactor permit at the Callaway Energy Center.
The NRC's public open house meeting will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Fulton City Hall, 18 East 4th St. in Fulton.
Members of the NRC's Region 4 staff from Arlington, Texas, will be available during the meeting to discuss the preliminary results of its review and to answer questions from the public.
The NRC team inspected the plant's management programs and the processes used to determine what systems, structures and components are required to be monitored for aging effects.
Under NRC regulations, the original operating license for a commercial nuclear power plant has a term of 40 years. The license can be renewed for up to an additional 20 years if NRC requirements are met.
The current nuclear reactor operating license for the Callaway plant expires in 11 years on Oct. 18, 2024.
