Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive seeks donations and volunteers

On Saturday, May 11 SERVE, Inc. and local post offices hope to see more than just letters and bills in the mail. In fact, they hope to see non-perishable food items.

Every year post offices across the nation participate in The National Association of Letter Carriers' food drive, called The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. The drive is the largest single-day food drive in the nation.

"We collect more food on that day than anyone else does so it's huge for the food banks and these needy families," said Jacqueline Forsee, acting postmaster at the Fulton Post Office.

Last year, the Callaway County area collected approximately 10,000 pounds of food. Nationally, the drive collected 70.7 million pounds of food donations.

To participate, residents can put non-perishable food items in a designated blue bag and leave them by their mailboxes for a local post office carrier or volunteer to pick them up. The bags and informational postcards will be delivered to area residents next week.
