Fulton colleges compete in blood donation contest

Westminster College and William Woods University are competing for a traveling Red Cross blood donation trophy.

The two Fulton institutions of higher learning are partnering in friendly Blood Donor Challenge competition to determine the school with the highest percentage of students enrolled donating blood to the Red Cross.

Dan Fox of the Red Cross said he is pleased the schools are competing for such a worthwhile cause.

"The American Red Cross thanks both schools for their participation and their efforts to raise blood donations. Regardless of which campus wins the Blood Donor Challenge," Fox said, "the real winners are the recipients of the blood. Their lives may be saved, thanks in part to the generosity of blood donors."

The first blood collection drive will be on Thursday, Sept. 20, at both Westminster and William Woods.

Blood donations from William Woods students will be at 1 University Drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 20.

Blood donations from Westminster students will be at 501 Westminster Ave. from 1-7 p.m.

Future blood collection events are scheduled at each school during November of this year and in January and April of next year.

Donors can register online at www.redcrossblood.org or call 800-733-2767 (800-RED-CROSS).

Fox said all blood types are needed to ensure the Red Cross maintains an adequate blood supply.
