Rebuilding this year of the last three bridges in Callaway County included in the Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program marked the end of MoDOT's program in Central Missouri.

A total of 13 Callaway County bridges were included in the 88 recently completed state road bridge projects in Central Missouri as part of the Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program.

The five-year program to upgrade the bridges was completed in only four years in Central Missouri.

Three Central Missouri bridge projects completed this year in Callaway County are located along or near Route 94 in Callaway County. They are the Route 94 bridge at Portland, the Route 94 bridge at Mokane, and the Route PP bridge over Middle River.

The Safe and Sound program was the largest bridge improvement effort in Missouri history. When the statewide program began in February of 2009, it set a goal of improving 802 of the state's worst bridges in five years.

Statewide, the program is scheduled to be completed this month, about one year ahead of schedule.
