Callaway County residents turned in 169 pounds of unwanted prescription drugs during collection efforts Saturday in Fulton and Auxvasse.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Office supervised a Prescription Take-Back program Saturday in Fulton at Callaway Water District No. 2 and in Auxvasse at the Grand Prairie Baptist Church.

The location in Fulton was staffed by employees of Water District No. 2. At that location, 101 pounds of old or unused medication were collected.

The Auxvasse location was staffed by members of the Auxvasse Lions Club and the Auxvasse Police Department. At Auxvasse, four large boxes of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs were filled weighing 68 pounds.

The countywide effort was part of the national drug take-back program.

To prevent contamination of ground water, area residents are urged not to dispose of unwanted, and expired prescription and over-the-counter drugs by tossing them in the garbage or flushing them down the drain.

Instead, they can be assured they will be disposed of properly if brought to the drug take back effort.
