A Fulton woman was air-lifted to University Hospital in Columbia Wednesday following an accident where a metal object fell off of a truck and crashed through her windshield, the Fulton Police Department said.
FPD Major Roger Rice said that emergency dispatchers received a call around 1:50 p.m. Wednesday from a homeowner along Wood Street near St. Eunice Road who said that a vehicle had been in an accident and wound up in his front yard. Emergency dispatchers found the driver of a silver 2002 Dodge Caravan with "serious injuries" to the left side of her forehead.
An investigation revealed that Karen Ann Doerhoff, 56 of Vine Street, had been driving with her daughter Mikaela, 26, northbound on Wood Street when an object fell off a flat bed truck or large vehicle they had been following, bounced off the pavement and broke through the windshield, striking Doerhoff in the left side of her forehead before settling in the back of the vehicle.
"The passenger was able to grab the wheel. She guided the vehicle through some trees and it crossed over two driveways and got where it was," said Rice. "The only damage to the vehicle was the windshield and both mirrors were knocked off when they went through the trees - they were just narrow enough for the van to fit."
