Opposition develops to planned enterprise zone

Opposition has developed to a proposal by the Fulton Area Development Corporation to designate about 20 percent of Callaway County as an Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ).

The proposal requires action by the Callaway County Commission to appoint a seven-member EEZ board that will advise the commission and report to the director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

If the proposal is approved by the County Commission and the state agency, the EEZ would remain in effect for 25 years.

After meeting Thursday with a delegation of about a dozen opponents to the EEZ proposal, Callaway County Commissioner Gary Jungermann said the commission has decided to put the issue on hold for the time being in order to seek more information about pros and cons of enhanced enterprise zones.

He added a formal public hearing also is required sometime in December.

Another public information session on the issue has been organized by the Fulton Area Development Corporation at 1 p.m. on Nov. 29 in the conference room at the Callaway County Health Department, 4950 County Road 304, in Fulton.

Bruce Hackmann, FADC president, said members of the public interested in the EEZ proposal are urged to attend.
