Ariana Alton, a North Callaway High School senior, learned Thursday she is the winner of a $1,000 scholarship from Charter Communications and will be featured in television public service announcements along with numerous other scholarships she has received.
Alton said she wrote a winning essay about her desire for a career in communications as part of her scholarship application to Charter Communications. She also will be featured in a public service announcement that will air on Charter cable networks later this summer in Missouri and Illinois.
Alton was one of 10 Charter Communications winners in Missouri and Illinois and the only winner in Central Missouri.
With a more than 4.0 current grade average at North Callaway High School, Alton has been active in numerous organizations and last year was invited to become a member of the National Honor Society.
During her high school years, Alton was active in the Future Farmers Association (FFA) and 4-H Clubs. She participated in public speaking competitions and events.
She has taken enough dual-credit college courses at North Callaway through Central Methodist University that will enable her to enroll as a sophomore this fall at Hannibal LaGrange University at Hannibal. Then next year she has tentative plans to transfer as a junior to the University of Missouri-Columbia to complete a degree in communications.
"After college I would like to become involved in the Missouri Farm Bureau's Agribusiness and Education promotion program. I would like a career anywhere I could be in front of people. I love public speaking and I enjoy appearing at events. I also would enjoy radio or television broadcasting," Alton said.
