Callaway Humane Society to host adoption event Saturday

Louis, a coonhound, is one of about eight dogs up for adoption at Callaway County Humane Society's adoption event. The event, predominately featuring bigger dogs, will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, at the Fulton Dog Park.

Fulton residents hoping to become one of the city's many pet owners will have a chance to do so Saturday. The Callaway County Humane Society will host an adoption event from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fulton Dog Park.

Prospective owners will have a chance to come out to meet and play with the Humane Society's eight or so dogs ready for adoption. If they meet a dog they like and pass the application, they can begin the process of adoption.

Callaway County Humane Society president Sandy Corbet said that adopting or fostering dogs goes beyond having a new four-legged friend around the house.

"People don't understand you're saving a life," said Corbet. "If we don't have a home to put them in when we rescue them, we have to take them to Central Missouri Animal Shelter. It's a kill shelter, so there's a chance they will be put down. Fosters are major players in saving an animal's life."

Some of the dogs there will be larger breed and the animals average around 2 years old, but the dogs needing homes run the range from lab and pit bull puppies to miniature poodles. Corbet said that they try to do adoption events whenever there is a need for them.

"They're with foster homes, and we don't want to overload our fosters with having dogs for too long," said Corbet. "Large breed dogs are a little harder with our economy to find homes for because they eat more. They're really nice dogs, (but) we try not to leave dogs with (foster families) for more than a few months."
