NCHS Principal to retire after 33 years

When North Callaway High School principal Carol Green came down to the school's media center Friday afternoon to deal with what she was told was an accident involving a ceiling tile and a computer, she was instead greeted with a much more pleasant surprise. Dozens of her friends, staff and colleagues filled the room to shower her in gifts and bid her farewell.

Green's 13th year at North Callaway will be the last in her 33-year career as a Missouri educator. The surprise reception May 11 showed the affect she's had on the people who have had a chance to work with her over the years.

Green started her career in education in Forsyth, Mo., where she was a junior high P.E. and science teacher. Eventually she moved to New Bloomfield to teach for 12 years before settling into her current tenure at North Callaway. Over the years, she felt called to be a principal rather than a teacher.

"Through the years, it just seemed like maybe I could help kids more than just the few that I had in those areas," she said. "I decided to become a principal to hopefully help a lot more kids."

If her reception was any indicator, she made quite the splash from the principal's office. About 30 people where there to surprise her. Among the gifts Green received were a year's subscription to Netflix, a large tiled concrete Thunderbird for her garden, several chairs to relax in during her retirement and membership to a timeshare program for inexpensive vacations.
