The Callaway County Sheriff's Office received a report of a burglary in the eastern part of the county Saturday afternoon that included the theft of two distinctive items: A machine gun reconfigured to be semi-automatic and a mounted Red Stag head.

Cpl. Jeff Harding said because the items - which were taken from a hunting cabin close to the Montgomery County border - are so identifiable, the Sheriff's Office is looking for help from the public in finding the individual or individuals responsible.

"You're not going to steal something like this and not talk about it," Harding said.

In addition to the machine gun and the Red Stag, he said other items stolen include several thousand dollars' worth of miscellaneous ammunition, hunting clothes and a fish fryer.

Harding said he would encourage anyone with information regarding the theft to contact the Callaway County Sheriff's Office at (573) 642-7291. Anonymous tips also can be made to Callaway County Crime Stoppers at (573) 592-2474.
