Youth On Up to host night of basketball

In its never-ending quest to find fun activities for local young people, Youth On Up and Westminster College will be hosting Midnight Basketball on Friday.

From 10 p.m. until midnight, Callaway County youth age 14-20 are invited to come play basketball in the Callaway County YMCA gym. Teams will be formed that night, and will play against one another.

"We know the kids like to play basketball, and we figure if we did it at night in a safe place they would come in and enjoy it and it will keep them off the streets," Youth On Up volunteer Yolanda Smith said. "When the kids get there we're going to talk to them about other ideas they want to do and we'll try to put it together for them.

"The more we get to show up, the more often we can do things like this."

Depending on how many teenagers show up, Smith said Westminster College students will face up against the local high school students, although if there is a low turnout it will be a mix.

She said Midnight Basketball is just the latest event to come out of a new partnership between Youth On Up and Westminster.
