Dad, son arrested Saturday for assaulting officers

A New Bloomfield father and son were taken to the Callaway County Jail early Saturday on matching counts of resisting arrest and assault of a law enforcement officer after deputies served a warrant for the father's arrest.

Deputies with the Callaway County Sheriff's Office arrived at an address on State Road Y at approximately 6 a.m. to arrest William Kirk on a warrant for a weapons violation from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms. Kirk's son, Ryan Kirk, immediately interfered with that attempt.

"Dad was hiding and the son initially denied he was there," Sheriff Dennis Crane said. "But (the deputies) noticed two individuals hiding under a truck. One of them was William Kirk."

According to a press release from the sheriff's office, Ryan Kirk, "allegedly interfered with the arrest of William and assaulted a deputy" and then resisted arrest himself when he attempted to run away.

The release further states that while a deputy was dealing with Ryan Kirk, William Kirk - whom Crane said was armed with a knife - "allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the other deputy."

Ryan Kirk, 18, was arrested on suspicion of felony interfering with arrest, felony resisting arrest and assault of a law enforcement officer.

William Kirk, 36, was arrested on the ATF warrant for a weapons violation and suspicion of felony resisting arrest and assault of a law enforcement officer.
