Having secured financial support from local sponsors to brighten up Fulton's downtown area with hanging flower baskets, Ward 4 Councilman Steve Moore now is looking for in-kind support to help maintain the beautification project.
Moore and a team of three volunteers - Eric Flynn, Kevin Flynn and Carol Ryan - have been watering the 31 hanging baskets along Court, Fifth and Market streets daily, and now are hoping to expand their crew.
"We have to water them seven days a week, so if they could get eight more (volunteers) that would be easier," said Moore, who spearheaded the flower baskets project as part of his ongoing efforts to make Fulton's downtown area more appealing to visitors. "I don't mind doing two or three days, but seven days makes it hard if you're going out of town."
Although watering the flowers originally consisted of climbing ladders with a bucket, now the crew has more sophisticated toys - a Gator equipped with a water pump and hose - to help get the job done. Moore estimated it takes approximately an hour and a half to get all of the baskets watered.
He said he hopes to receive more offers of assistance with the project, "just for community pride."
