County fair gives children a chance to strut their stuff

Callaway County parents will have the opportunity to show off their littlest treasures in the Kingdom of Callaway County Fair's annual baby and Little Mister and Miss Callaway County contests.

Infants and toddlers up to age three will compete in the Callaway County Baby Contest at 6 p.m. on Aug. 2, while 4 and 5 year olds will vie for the titles of Little Mister and Little Miss Callaway County at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3.

Baby Contest coordinator Brenda McCray said her event continues to be popular every year because "everyone is proud of their babies and wants to show them off to the community."

She said check-in for the contest will start at 4:30 p.m., with a $2 registration fee. There will be no advance registration. Prizes will be awarded to the top three children - dressed in casual or beach attire - in five classes: 0-6 months, 7-12 months, 1-year-olds, 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds.

McCray said she would encourage parents to bring their babies out on Aug. 2.

"Anybody can win," she said.

Little Mister and Miss organizer Connie Foust said her pageant grew to approximately 10 boys and 20 girls last year from four boys and 10 girls the year before, and she is hoping to see increased participation again this year.

"It's something fun for the little kids to do," Foust said.

Sign-in will start at 6 p.m., with a $5 registration fee.
