Residents of Water District No. 1 in Callaway County, which includes all of Holts Summit, have been asked to conserve water because of current weather conditions.

"This action is needed to help protect our system and assure basic service to everyone," said Brad Scrivner, general manager of Callaway County Water District No. 1.

Scrivner said Thursday the water shortage is caused by many district customers watering their lawns because of a recent prolonged drought in Central Missouri.

"We have evidence that this isn't just normal water use. It is caused directly by watering of lawns," Scrivner said.

Scrivner said the district is asking customers to conserve water to help protect consistent water pressure throughout the district.

"We are asking our customers to cut back on all unnecessary water usage until further notice. At this point, we will not be taking enforcement action against people who do not comply. We are asking that if people continue to water their grass a little, that they do so on a regular schedule. We are hoping voluntary conservation will work without enforcement action," Scrivner said.
