SERVE, Inc. of Fulton has received two and one half tons of processed and frozen venison donated by deer hunters in Callaway County and throughout Central Missouri.
Tammy Roberts, a University of Missouri Extension nutrition specialist, said venison is nutritious and a healthy choice.
Venison has low fat content compared to many other meats.
In Fulton SERVE received 4,808 pounds of frozen and processed venison.The First Baptist Church Food Pantry in Guthrie received 500 pounds of venison and the Holts Summit Soup Kitchen in Holts Summit received 180 pounds of venison.
The donated venison came from the Share the Harvest Program sponsored by the Central Missouri Chapter of Safari Club International.
During the just completed 2011-12 deer hunting seasons, hunters in Callaway County and throughout Central Missouri donated 28,300 pounds of venison to Central Missouri charities.
