The YMCA of Callaway County has offered to spend $475,000 to convert the Holts Summit Civic Center into a branch of the YMCA. All current public civic functions except late night wedding receptions would continue in the converted YMCA exercise facility and community meeting center.

The Holts Summit Board of Aldermen is considering a proposal from the YMCA of Callaway County to expand and operate the city's community center and lease all city parks for athletic programs.

The YMCA proposal includes an expansion and remodeling of the Holts Summit Community Center in Greenway Park. The expanded building would be used as a YMCA exercise facility while continuing to allow another part of the structure to be used as a public community center.

Details of the proposal were offered to the board by Patty Miller of Fulton, YMCA executive director. Also present at the meeting was Rick Gohring of Fulton, YMCA president. The YMCA of Callaway County operates two facilities in Fulton and wants to add another facility in Holts Summit.

Miller said YMCA officials looked at numerous private and public buildings in Holts Summit while seeking a building to bring an exercise facility and other organized sports programs to Holts Summit.

After discussing the situation with city officials, the YMCA decided on a plan providing cooperation between the city and the YMCA in a partnership that provides more recreational services to the community and expands the current Holts Summit Civic Center building.
