Callaway hunters harvest 491 antlerless deer

Third highest total in state

Callaway County hunters recorded the third highest kill of antlerless deer during the recent 12-day antlerless firearms season.

The top three harvest counties were Camden with 553 deer checked, Benton with 518, and Callaway with 491. Although the anterless season is designed mainly to thin the deer herd by taking only female does, some other deer also are sometimes taken by mistake. In Callaway County, there were five antlered male bucks taken during the anterless season along with 99 male button bucks and 387 female does.

Throughout the state, hunters harvested 15,136 deer during the special antlerless season that followed the regular 11-day firearms season for both male and female deer. In the main firearms season, hunters in Callaway County took 3,308 deer, the sixth highest county total that included 204,668 deer harvested statewide.
