North Callaway Board approves tax rate, lauds APR performance

At Thursday's tax rate hearing and board meeting, the North Callaway Board of Education set the 2012 tax rate.

The tax rate for operating expenses was set at $3.2512 and the rate for debt services at $0.6622, combining for a total tax rate of $3.9134.

That is an increase from last year's total tax rate of $3.7910. The new rates are up from $3.1288 for operating expenses; the debt services tax value remains the same.

Tax rates are calculated by dividing the amount of revenue the district needs by the current assessed valuation. The result is multiplied 100, so the tax rate is expressed in cents per $100 assessed valuation.

As with Fulton Public School District, Superintendent Bryan Thomsen said the rate may be readjusted in coming weeks. The county assessor's office was changing its computer software at the time it provided county districts with numbers, and some values could be corrected. Currently available assessed valuation figures show that North Callaway had a total assessed valuation of $80,796,726, down from last year's $83,136,033.

The board also commended the district's teachers and staff for producing a perfect 14 score on this year's Annual Performance Report (APR) for 2012. The district met all 14 standards put forth by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as one of two bonus categories. Such standards include MAP test scores, attendance rate and graduation rates.
