Stray and abandoned animals are running rampant throughout the county, and one Fulton councilman has proposed an arrangement that could alleviate some of the problem while bringing in the city more money.
It's just a tentative plan that hasn't been formally presented before Fulton City Council, but councilman Steve Moore has suggested once the new animal shelter is built, Fulton could charge a monthly or annual fee to lease space to other area cities and agencies, allowing them to bring some of their stray animals here.
The plan came up at Auxvasse's Tuesday city council meeting, when alderperson Stephanie Leverett said Moore mentioned a possibility when the two officials were discussing solutions to animal control problems.
Residents and aldermen in Auxvasse have both reported an abundance of animals on the streets. Auxvasse officials said they attempt to deal with the problem, but they only have a small facility to hold animals that is at capacity near eight dogs and cats, and the city does not have an animal control staff.
