Library to host book discussion to "work children's minds'

If your child is a fan of mysteries and puzzles, they may want to be at the Callaway County Public Library on April 28.

From 11 a.m. until noon, the library is hosting a book discussion of "The Puzzling World of Winston Breen" - the first in a series of books by Eric Berlin featuring the puzzle-loving Winston Breen and his friends that includes "The Potato Chip Puzzles" and the upcoming "The Puzzler's Mansion," set to be released on May 10.

Children's librarian Jerilyn Hahn said they decided to host the event after "The Potato Chip Puzzles" was chosen as a Mark Twain Award nominee last year, increasing the popularity of the books.

"It's a great book to do a program on because the whole series revolves around puzzles and games," Hahn said. "Not only can we have the book discussion, we can work on puzzles of our own."

Hahn said one of the main projects she and the children in attendance will work on is a SOMA cube. A SOMA cube is a puzzle comprised of 27 smaller pieces in seven shapes that can be put together in 240 different ways to make one large cube or other shapes.

"The publisher has a website for the books, so we're going to have some of those extra puzzles as well," she said. "The kids in the books hang out at a pizza parlor, so we're also going to have pizza."
