Literacy program to feature children's author, illustrator

AUXVASSE - For children's book author and illustrator Deborah Zemke, there is joy to be found in putting words and pictures together to tell a story.

She hopes to pass that joy on to young readers during a presentation during the Literacy Night program on Sept. 13 at Auxvasse Elementary School. From 6-7:30 p.m. in the school's cafeteria, the author of more than 12 books - including "D is for Doodle," "Doodle a Zoodle," "Don't Bargain with the Tooth Fairy," "Wise Acres" and "The Secret Chicken Club" - and illustrator of more than 40 more will share her craft with area children. The event is open to the public.

"I'm going to talk about words and pictures and what happens when you put them together; how pictures tell stories and how you can use words to paint a picture," said Zemke, who published her first children's book in 1988. "I always enjoy talking to kids and hearing what they have to say.
