Givens makes Blue Jays go in opening win

On Thursday, Westminster College head football coach John Welty referred to his senior wide receiver Carl Givens as a guy who can score any time he touches the ball.

But even Welty had to be impressed by the performance Givens put on in the Blue Jays' season opener against Rockford College.

"The way he played (Saturday), he was like a man amongst boys," Welty said. "But that's the kind of player he is. He's our Jerry Rice, our go-to guy."

Givens - a first-team, all-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference selection in 2010 - totaled 219 yards of offense and four touchdowns in Westminster's 51-24 rout of the Rockford in Saturday's season opener at Priest Field.

Givens touched the ball nine times and averaged a little more than 24 yards per attempt.

"With Carl, he's so big, he's so strong that people just bounce off of him," Welty said. "He's like a tight end that can run."
