Sophomore forward Joao Paulo Parro scored two goals and assisted on another Tuesday night, directing the William Woods University men's soccer team to a 5-1 romp over Avila University in the season opener at Firley Field.

Parra gave William Woods the early edge when he scored off an assist from sophomore forward Marcelo Carreiro in the 17th minute. Carreiro then made it 2-0 on a penalty kick in the 20th minute.

Kyle Dlugolecki responded with Avila's lone goal in the 53rd minute. However, the Owls countered with goals from freshman midfielder Luca Stroeter, sophomore midfielder Kyle Konigsberg and Parra over the next 15 minutes to pull away.

William Woods accumulated 23 shots, including eight on goal. The Eagles managed just five shots and only two on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Geoghegan finished with one save for the Owls.

William Woods kicks off American Midwest Conference play against first-year member Benedictine University-Springfield (Ill.) at 5 p.m. Friday at Firley Field. The Owls then host Concordia University at 11 a.m. Saturday.
