Accident shuts down Highway 54 Friday

Highway 54 was closed for a short time Friday morning after a truck ran into a tractor-trailer pulling onto the highway.

According to a Fulton Police Department press release, the department received a call of a motor vehicle accident on US 54 eastbound and County Road 110 at approximately 11:31 a.m.

The press release states that John L. Davey, 59, of LaVista, Neb., had been driving his tractor-trailer westbound on US 54 before turning around at the crossover at County Road 110. Davey pulled through the crossover, then began moving eastbound on US 54 in the driving lane. As the tractor-trailer began picking up speed, it was struck from the rear by a Ford F150 driven by Jerry W. Baker, 69, of Dixon.

"(Baker) wasn't paying attention, or was distracted, and he ran right into the back of the tractor-trailer," said Maj. Roger Rice with the FPD. "He never even hit the brakes."
