Hornets prepare to close out disappointing season

After a hard-fought 10-8 win at Marshall on Sept. 16, Fulton Hornets head football coach Pat Kelley hoped to see his young team trending upward going into the second half of their season and toward district play.

"We thought we had some things working and it just didn't happen," Kelley said Thursday afternoon. "You have to play each week and not rest on the week before.

"I'm not saying that's what we did, but it's tough to have a little momentum and not be able to capitalize on it."

Fulton proceeded to drop its next five games by an average of 35.4 points. The Hornets (1-8, 0-2) close out the 2011 season and Class 3, District 6 play tonight against Missouri Military Academy in Mexico. Kickoff is at 7.

Fulton entered the season a skilled, albeit young team that scored just 17 points in their first three games. And the campaign started off shaky with the loss of senior quarterback Jake Matthews in the first half of a 54-0 loss at School of the Osage in the season opener.
