City hall improvements eyed by NB aldermen

Mayor Terry Shaw asked the Board of Aldermen Thursday night to consider electronic storage of city records and interior renovation of city hall.

The board authorized the city clerk to seek a cost estimate of electronic record storage and city hall renovations.

Shaw said the city is running out of storage space and city hall is cluttered with filing cabinets. "I would like to get rid of all of these filing cabinets and old desks and replace them with more modern L-shaped work areas. The carpeting is damaged in places and needs to be replaced," Shaw said.

The mayor said the city also needs to consider the fact that vital city records could be lost if there is a fire or if the building is hit by a tornado. With electronic storage off-site, the city's records would be more secure, he said. "Records could be indexed and accessed easier. We also could place all city ordinances online for the convenience of the public," Shaw said.

To help the tornado-stricken people of Dumas and surroundings, donations can be made to the Delta Area Disaster Relief Fund, care of the Delta Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 894, Dumas, AR, 71639, or through the Arkansas Community Foundation, 700 S. Rock St., Little Rock, AR, 72202.
