Human Rights Comm. seeks directional input

October 5th, 2011 in News

Fulton's Human Rights Commission soon will be asking city residents for help in defining its purpose.

The commission has been largely innactive in recent years, and current Human Rights Commission president Cathi Harris said she feels it is high time the group figures out what, if anything, it should be doing.

"Is there a purpose for the human rights commission, if so, what? Do we focus on the educational aspect, are we on-call (as issues come up), or do we turn it over to someone else who is already doing those things?" Harris asked. "I don't want to be named a commission if we're not doing something ... unless we have a value and a purpose."

To that end, the commission is planning a public forum to gather input from area residents as to what they think the answers to those questions are. That meeting is tentatively planned for Nov. 15, although the commission still is trying to secure the John C. Harris Community Center as the location.
