The Cedar Creek Ranger District in Callaway County, which is part of the Mark Twain National Forest, is becoming a popular area to hunt deer. It's one reason for the high number of deer harvested in Callaway County.
Todd Houf, Callaway County Conservation agent, said the 15,000-acre Cedar Creek Ranger District operated by the U.S. Forestry Service is located mainly in Callaway County. Some of the district is in Boone County.
The Cedar Creek District is part of the Mark Twain National Forest, which includes nine separate districts in Missouri. The Callaway County forestry region provides good deer cover with oak and hickory trees and tall grass prairies.
