Jail officials seek upgrades, more staff

Two new jail officers, cameras, locks requested

The Callaway County Commission is reviewing several budget requests to upgrade equipment and services at the Callaway County Jail, including two more corrections officers and upgrades to jail security cameras and locks.

Capt. Robbie Harrison of the Callaway County Sheriff's Department, who supervises 20 corrections officers, asked the commission to authorize hiring two more corrections officers to meet growing needs.

"We are still having issues with the security camera system," Harrison said. He said 10 cameras are not working and six multi-plexors are at least nine years old.

Eastern District Commissioner Gabe Craighead said the Sheriff's Department has temporarily solved the problem of overcrowding of female inmates by shifting some male inmates to other areas of the jail to make more space available for female inmates.
