The brick sign in front of the Fulton Post Office looks like a pile of rubble after a car crashed into in Thursday evening.
According to the Fulton Police Department, the accident was reported at 6:20 p.m. Thursday after a Honda Accord traveling east on Fourth Street veered off the right side of the roadway and collided with the sign.
Delbert D. Groves, 57, of Fulton, reported to FPD that he was ill and passed out behind the wheel, causing his vehicle to travel off the roadway. He had no apparent injuries from the crash, police stated.
Maj. Roger Rice of the FPD said the car was towed from the scene and sustained substantial damage to the front end. He added that although it is unknown how fast Groves was driving, even at only 20 or 30 miles per hour, the weight of the vehicle hitting the sign would cause significant damage to both the brick sign and the Honda.
He said there is no evidence that alcohol was a factor in the accident.
Larry Whisler, post office supervisor, said he received a call Thursday night about the accident and will send FPD's report to a managing office in St. Louis to decide what will be done about the sign. He said he was unsure yet when the sign would be repaired or how much it would cost.
"We just put a new parking lot in and fixed some pot holes, and now we're going to have to get a new sign," Whisler said.
