Public asked for One Read selections

November 1st, 2011 in News

Read a good book lately?

If you have, members of the Daniel Boone Library's One Read program want to hear from you.

Starting today and running until Nov. 30, DBRL patrons are invited to make suggestions as to which book they think the community should read for the 2012 One Read. Titles can be submitted online at oneread.dbrl.org. or at any of the library locations - including the Callaway County Public Library in Fulton.

Previous One Read selections include "Plainsong" by Kent Haruf, "Nickel and Dimed" by Barbara Ehrenreich, "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card and "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen.

Asked what kinds of books the reading panel looks for, local One Read Task Force member Mary Ann Beahon said as long as it is something that could have mass appeal, any novel could be a potential candidate for the community-wide reading program.

"We have had such a variety of books over the last 10 years - "To Kill a Mockingbird' is a classic, we've had science fiction - I'm beginning to think almost any book can make a good One Read book," Beahon said. "If it's a book that's well-written, has good use of language, with themes that people can relate to.

"This year was extremely popular, I hope we can find another that can be equally successful."
