Hornets stay in funk after loss to Owls

May 13th, 2011 in News

What looked to be a great diving play to end an inning and squash a rally, in reality, squashed the Fulton Hornets.

The hit came off the bat of Marshall Owls sophomore catcher Zach Bishop, a ball that looked destined for the shallow outfield grass instead found its way into the glove of Hornets senior second baseman Alex Thomas. Thomas hauled in the grounder and popped up to make the throw to first base for what looked to be a sure out.

Apparently the first base umpire saw things a little differently. He says he saw Hornets junior first baseman Burke Echelmeier bobble the exchange. The Owls got the call and another life in the top of the fourth inning and Fulton got a glimpse of the first signs of its eventual unraveling.
