Two pit bull terrier dogs attacked a Fulton postman Tuesday afternoon and inflicted serious bite wounds to his face.
Maj. Roger Rice said at 12:28 p.m. Tuesday a Fulton postman was delivering mail to 303 W. 14th St. in Fulton when two pit bull terrier dogs escaped from the house and attacked the postman.
When police arrived, medics at the scene were administering aid to the postal worker who had serious bite marks on his face inflicted by the two dogs.
The postman was taken to University Hospital in Columbia in serious condition.
Rice said police are withholding the name of the U.S. Postal Service victim of the pit bull attack because police want to notify members of his family before releasing his identity. The postman works in Fulton delivering mail but is a resident of Jefferson City, Rice said.
Rice said the pit bull dogs are owned by Brandon Shane Vanstory, 25, of 23 Green Meadow Drive, which is outside the city limits of Fulton.
Rice said Vanstory brings the dogs into Fulton and they stay inside the house at 303 W. 14 St. during the day.
"The dogs got out of the house when the postman came to the door to deliver mail and they attacked him," Rice said.
Rice said police had received no previous complaints involving dogs at the residence where the attack occurred. He said the area around the house was not fenced and the dogs escaped from the house when the postman arrived.
The two pit bull dogs involved in the attack of the postman were taken to the animal shelter in Fulton.
Earlier in the day, police investigated another complaint in Fulton involving another pit bull dog that was barking at horses at William Woods University.
Rice said in this instance the pit bull dog was not attempting to bite horses but was only barking at them. Rice said there was no connection between the two incidents because they involved different dogs at another location.
