An unwanted pond has formed because of faulty drainage at the southeast corner of the new Fulton roundabout at the intersection of Business 54, Route O and 2nd Street.
Fulton City Administrator Bill Johnson said he has contacted the Missouri Transportation Department about the problem.
Johnson said he didn't know if more dirt would be hauled in to create a gradual slope so the area would drain or if dirt in the area would be reshaped to form a ditch down the center of the flat area so the water will drain off.
"There are various ways they can correct the situation," Johnson said.
Eric Schroeter, assistant Central District engineer, said work is not yet completed on the entire roundabout project even though traffic began flowing on it last December. Schroeter said he would have someone in the department check on the area around the roundabout to determine what needs to be done to correct the situation.
"It is my understanding that seeding and mulching remains to be completed in the area," Schroeter said.
"There was a big push to get the roundabout open before Christmas," Johnson said. "Not all of the work around the roadway is completed. The contract is still open on the work. I believe the area around the roundabout is too soft for any work to be done now. We will most likely have to wait until spring to complete final work on the project."
Fulton's first roundabout realigns the intersection of Business 54 and Second Street. The roundabout accommodates traffic flow one way in a counter-clockwise direction around a central circular island. Drivers about to enter the roundabout yield to vehicles already in the roundabout.
Two bridges over Stinson Creek were demolished and replaced with a large culvert running under the roundabout. One bridge carried north and south Business 54 traffic and the other carried Route O and Second Street traffic east and west of the intersection. A traffic light at the intersection also was eliminated.
A walking trail along the creek under the roundabout also was retained in the culvert. The concrete surface is slightly higher on the south side of the culvert so the trail can be used when the creek is not high.
The unwanted pond has formed on the other side of roundabout away from Stinson Creek.
