The City of Fulton took the first step toward a new police station Tuesday night when the City Council approved first reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase of the former Callaway Electric Cooperative building.

Mayor LeRoy Benton told the council that the building - located at 503 Truman Road - would be a more cost-effective solution than to renovate or rebuild the existing police station at 510 Market Street. The purchase would include both the building and approximately 10.5 acres of property as well.

"Our intent is to relocate our police department there. Our current building is in need of significant repairs," Benton said. "This allows us to get them in an adequate facility at a substantial amount of savings.

"I'm really excited about this."
