Our Opinion: Activities offer summer fun for youngsters

"There's nothing to do" no longer is a valid complaint from children during summer months.

Summer activities oriented toward children focus on physical, spiritual and intellectual development, combined with simple fun.

A variety of summer camps are being held, including the Youth Sports Day Camp sponsored by Jefferson City Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry.

Although the camps are designed for enjoyment, the activities emphasize a healthy lifestyle, including a nutrition component provided by the Cole County Health Department.

For families interested in activities combined with spiritual lessons, a number of area churches will offer Vacation Bible Schools beginning next week.

The events typically revolve around a theme and offer entertaining activities designed to instill Christian values.

Although school may be out, youngsters may pursue the joy of reading by participating in the Summer Reading Program sponsored by Missouri River Regional Library.

The program for children - which will include a number of activities - continues through July 29.

Teens and adults also can enjoy taking part in separate teen and adult reading programs, which both continue through Aug. 31.

With temperatures in the 90s - not uncommon during a Missouri summer - municipal pools are an attractive venue to cool off, have fun and learn to swim.

Jefferson City also hosts a number of events designed for families and children, including the KidsFest scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

The 28th annual installment will include a petting zoo on the library lawn, hayrides on the Capitol grounds and vendors and activities on High and Madison streets in the downtown area.

These activities and events - a fraction of what's available for children and families - indicate Jefferson City offers plenty to do, enjoy and learn this summer.
